Mike Hanke has secured a January move away from Hannover 96. The 27-year old striker will move to Borussia Mönchengladbach after the Reds agreed to the move with the struggling Bundesliga side who are looking to add to their options up front.

From the Reds to the “Foals”

Mike Hanke has been part of the Reds squad for 3 years now and now he’s set to gallop into the “foals” system as they seek to maintain their place in the Bundesliga. Hanke made 81 Bundesliga appearances for Hannover 96 and managed to score 19 goals in that time. He had become known as somewhat of a joker card this season as he came off the bench to score two crucial goals en route to Hannover recording their best ever start to a season. In the match against Hamburg the German striker popped up in injury time to score the deciding goal in the 3-2 win over the northern rivals. He was also on target against his new club as he managed to snatch a late equaliser to keep the score at 1-1. However, despite winning over the fans with such performances, Hanke was clear that he wasn’t content with the joker role and was looking for regular first team football.

“Mike wanted to make the switch and we made sure we didn’t put any obstacles in his way,” explained sporting director Jörg Schmadtke. “All that’s left for us to do is wish him all the best with his efforts at his new club.”

The striker has become the proverbial journeyman having made the switch to the Reds in 2007 when he moved from VfL Wolfsburg, before that he played for FC Schalke 04 between 2000 and 2005.

We hope Mike can enjoy a successful time at Borussia Mönchengladbach.
