Hannover draw Anzhi Makhachkala

Hannover will meet Anzhi Makhachkala in the last 32 of the UEFA Europa League. The draw was completed on Thursday afternoon at the UEFA headquarters in Nyon, Switzerland.

Opening leg takes place in Moscow

96 will go to Moscow’s Luzhniki Stadium on Thursday, February 14th 2013 as Group L winners, where they will play against Anzhi on artificial turf. The return leg will take place a week later on February 21st 2013 in the AWD-Arena.

Reaction to the draw:

Martin Kind, 96-president:

“It’s a very challenging draw, although it was last summer against FC Sevilla as well. We should approach the game full of spirit and confidence.”

Jörg Schmadtke, sporting director:
Moscow is a vibrant city. I can only recommend that the fans get it to know it by going to the game. We’ll have to adjust to the synthetic surface. Obviously the conditions are very different on natural grass. Anzhi have spent a lot of money recently and really strengthened their squad. They’re sitting in second in the Russian league and have ambitious goals internationally too.”

Mirko Slomka, manager:
“My fellow manager Guus Hiddink has absolutely fantastic players to choose from. Samuel Eto’o, Lassana Diarra and Yuri Zhirkov to name but a few. I see it as an advantage that we have the second leg in front of the support of our own fans. Anzhi represent a big challenge for us.”

UEFA also revealed the last 16 draw today. The winner of the game between Anzhi Makhachkala and Hannover 96 will face the winner of Newcastle United against Metalist Kharkiv on the 7th and the 14th of March 2013.
