Hannover 96 have wrapped up the signing of Japanese defender Hiroki Sakai after the player agreed a four-year contract at the AWD-Arena.

The 22-year-old joins from J-League club Kashiwa Reysol, the club he has been at since he was a boy. He made a total of 61 league appearances for the first team, scoring five goals and assisting a further 13. Last year he was also a member of the team that won the J-League Championship.

As a player, Sakai is the model of a modern and educated attacking right-back. As well as being positionally aware and strong in the tackle, he also loves to get forward and take part in attacks, as is evidenced by his impressive statistics. He is a regular in the Japan U23 side and has made three appearances for the senior team. He still has plenty of potential as well, having been elected J-League Young Player of the Year in 2011.

Sakai will be part of the Japan squad that takes part in this summer’s Olympic Games in London. He is due to meet his new teammates in Hannover on July 1st, before beginning his preparation for the tournament on July 6th.
