NIEMALSALLEIN

He’s finally left everyone else behind him. Steven Cherundolo’s appearance on Saturday against Bayer 04 Leverkusen was his 299th in the Bundesliga for Hannover 96 – a new club record.

Old record stood for nearly 40 years

The American had hoped the result on Saturday might have been a little different though. Despite the 3-1 defeat to Bayer 04 Leverkusen, there was still something for “Stevie” to celebrate: With the 90 minutes he played at right back, he has now overtaken Jürgen Bandura, who made 298 Bundesliga appearances for the Reds between 1964 and 1974.

Lots of changes at the club

Cherundolo joined Hannover 96 in 1999, during which time he was still a student at Portland University. The American eventually realised his dream of playing professional football in Lower Saxony. The Reds’ captain has experienced the vast changes at the club over the years up close and personal. “Practically everything has changed. The stadium, the training pitches and above all how seriously 96 is now taken as a club by the public.” Cherundolo is in no hurry to discuss his future and a contract extension. He has let it be known though, that he feels incredibly settled in Hanover. “I’m building a house at the moment.
That pretty much says it all.”
