Four 96ers were away on international duty over the past few days: Ron-Robert Zieler made his fourth appearance for Germany against Spain, Robert Almer and the Austria national team increased their lead at the top of their qualification group, Leonardo Bittencourt and the U21 team won against the Netherlands whilst Salif Sané and his Senegal team mates qualified for the Africa Cup of Nations.

 

Zieler and the DFB team: Victory in the final match of the year
The Germany national team won 4-0 on Friday (14th November) in the EURO 2016 qualifier against Gibraltar in Nuremburg. Löw’s team are currently in third place in Group D after playing four of ten qualifying matches. Zieler was an unused substitute for the game  in Nuremburg but played the full game in the friendly against European Champions Spain on Tuesday (18th November). The World Champions won 1-0 in Vigo thanks to Toni Kroos' late goal.

A victory and a draw for Bittencourt and the U21s
Leonardo Bittencourt and the U21s have already qualified for EURO 2015 in Czech Republic, so played two friendlies during the break. In preparation for the tournament, manager Horst Hrubesch’s team won 3-1 against the Netherlands last Thursday (13th November). 96-player Bittencourt assisted the third goal. The victory was followed up by a 1-1 draw against the Czech Republic, who as well as hosting the tournament are in Germany's group.

Austria national team increase their lead at the top
The Austria national team and 96-goalkeeper Robert Almer continued their good form in European Championship qualifying. They won 1-0 on Saturday against Russia (15th November); Austria now top the table after four matches and are four points clear over the team in second, Sweden. On Tuesday (18th November), the Austria national team faced Brazil in a friendly. Almer, played the first 45 minutes of the game and kept a clean sheet, and his teammates were beaten 2-1. Austria's goal was the first they had scored in 40 years against the South American team. 

Sané qualifies for the Africa Cup of Nations with Senegal
Good news from the Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers! Senegal won 1-0 against Egypt on Saturday (15th November) and have secured their ticket to the tournament, due to take place in Guinea in January 2015. Salif Sané played for the full 90 minutes in the victory and ex-96er Mame Diouf scored the winner. Senegal play their sixth and final qualifier against Botswana on Wednesday (19th November).
