When the news broke early on November 10th 2009 that Hannover 96 goalkeeper Robert Enke had committed suicide by throwing himself in front of a regional train. Hannover, Germany and German football were shaken to the core by the news, and overcome by a mixture of tragedy and disbelief.

Enke had been suffering from severe depression in the months before his death, as his wife revealed to press after the news of his death broke. The goalkeeper had suffered immense mental scarring since the untimely death of his two-year-old daughter Lara in 2006.

Hannover 96 was inundated with emails, phonecalls and letters in tribute to Enke yesterday, and a silent vigil was held in his honour last night outside the AWD-Arena. The charity, the Robert Enke Trust, set up jointly by Hannover 96, the German Football Federation (DFB) and the German Football League (DFL), is receiving welcome donations for people suffering from depression, the illness which afflicted Enke himself.
