26 goals for Hannover 96
“I’m a striker” – This popular quote from Mame Diouf perfectly represents both his footballing talents and his attitude on the pitch. From the first whistle, he runs, heads, works hard with all he has in his body in order to get closer to his target: the opposition’s goal. What happens next is something both national and international goalkeepers could relay. Most recently it was Mainz goalkeeper Christian Wetklo who couldn’t prevent Diouf from giving Hannover a 2-1 lead on matchday 32.
The Senegalese striker has been a member of the Hannover 96 squad since January 28th, 2012 and in 49 appearances for the Reds, Diouf has shown his quality with 26 goals and 10 assists. More than enough evidence to be mentioned in the same breath as Bundesliga attacking talents such as Mario Gomez or Jakub Blaszczykowski who, like Diouf, have also scored 11 this season. The 25-year-old has no reason to hide away from his performances. In fairness, it’s not something he does often but when he does, he seizes the opportunity to support his teammates, like Johan Djourou, before pursuing his main passion – scoring goals. The best example of this was found in the 5-1 success against Hamburger SV earlier this season.

A striker with heart and passion: Mame Diouf
Footballing message
Dr. Jürgen Peter, board member of competition sponsor AOK (Niedersachsen health insurance company) appreciates Diouf’s commitment: “He’s got a lot of heart and soul.” Off the pitch, Diouf is also a role model for many, especially considering his positive and friendly manner. Music producer Mousse T. has praised his qualities as ones that leave an important sporting message: “You represent the Hannover football culture well beyond the borders of the city.” Diouf thanked the guests for the award, as well as his family, friends, teammates and coaches. He wouldn’t be Mame Diouf if he didn’t reiterate that he works hard for the team and that he hopes to be better the following year. Whatever he meant by that, remains an exciting prospect for all 96-supporters.
Three in a row for the Reds
Diouf joins the ranks of other 96-players who have won the award recently. After Jan Schlaudraff (2012) and Didier Ya Konan (2011), the Senegalese striker is the third Reds player in a row to receive the accolade. Overall, ten 96-players have won the prize during its 23-year history. Diouf now has a trophy and a golden boot to go along with the gold medal he won for January’s “Goal of the Month” award. On top of that, he has also earned a cheque for over €500 that goes towards the club’s youth setup.
