Nothing will ever be the same…

Following the news of the tragic death of our captain, goalkeeper and colleague Robert Enke, we - like you - are in a state of shock, disbelief and most of all pain and sadness.

"We all need some time to let this sink in..." said DFB President Theo Zwanziger after postponing Germany's international friendly match against Chile. Time to take things in is often a luxury seldom enjoyed in the fast-paced, often superficial world of professional football.

If there is one positive thing to be taken from death of Robert Enke - as tragic and sad as it is - it is the fact that it gives us a chance to remember that football is 'only' a form of entertainment, and that there are indeed far more important things in life. It gives us the chance to reconsider the widely held view that it is blessing to live your life in the public eye. It gives us the chance to realise that no amount of money or fame can guarantee you happiness. Most of all, though, it gives us a chance to realise that we should not hide our feelings and should always attempt to lend an ear our fellow human beings.

By closing our website for a few days, we hoped to give ourselves the necessary time to take in this terrible tragedy and give ourselves the necessary time to grieve so that we could return in an appropriate, considered manner. But what is appropriate at this terrible time? We were unable to find an answer to that question and are struggling to get back into the swing of our 'normal' everyday lives.

In that vein, we are not going to follow the old motto 'the show must go on'. No, that would not be fair on Robert. If his death has taught us one thing, it is that professional football is played by people like you and me - not by machines, programmed to entertain. They too are people who deserve our respect through the good times and the bad...

Of course, the Bundesliga season must continue - starting next weekend with the game against Schalke 04. It is going to be an almost impossible task for Robert's team-mates and will take a lot of courage from both players and fans to get through the day. Both the players and the other employees at Hannover 96 can all learn something from Robert Enke. Our captain always led by example, championing team spirit as a means of achieving a collective goal, something he proved with such bravery following the death of his daughter Lara when he returned between the sticks after just six days. Robert set a wonderful example, one which we plan to follow...

Robert was given a huge send-off in the AWD Arena on Sunday during a moving ceremony. He will stay with us in our hearts and his influence as an ambassador of Hannover 96 will continue to affect us all forever more.
