Breaking up a card game defender Sofian Chahed, whose made over 30 appearances for the Reds since his 2009 transfer from Hertha BSC, sits down for an interview. Ahead of the match against FSV Mainz 05 the Tunisian international discusses his contract extension, the political unrest in Africa and the recent match against the league leaders Borussia Dortmund.

Welcome Sofian. Let’s start by talking about the fact you’ve recently extended your contract. Which aspect of the club played a key role in the decision making process?

Sofian Chahed: “The sporting aspect, especially the recent progress we’ve been making on and off the pitch at the club. Of course I’d love to be getting a little more match time under my belt, but I’m hoping that will change in the future because it looks like we’ll have a part to play in Europe next season.

You’ve already made an appearance in Europe, right?

Sofian Chahed: “You’re right. I made quite a few appearances in the “old” UEFA Cup during my time with Hertha BSC Berlin.

So where did you learn how to play cards?

Sofian Chahed: “I used to play cards all the time when I was a little kid. I had fierce competitions with my brother and two sisters when we were growing up.

Are you a family man?

Sofian Chahed: “Absolutely. I always love seeing my family at every opportunity I get during my busy schedule.”

What did you make of the political tension in your home country of Tunisia?

Sofian Chahed: “Of course it wasn’t a good situation and wasn’t pleasant to watch. Even though the majority of people have come out happier, it was a tragedy that so many innocent people had to lose their lives in order to achieve that. However, it seems as though, had it not happened, nobody would have heard about it overseas.

And what about the similar scenes in the Ivory Coast?

Sofian Chahed: “I’m hoping that the unrest will subside so that the UN can step in so the situation can be defused as quickly and as peacefully as possible. Fortunately “Didi” reacted quickly to the news and put his family on a flight in order to move them to a safer location.

What did you make of the Reds last match against title chasing Borussia Dortmund?

Sofian Chahed: “For 60 minutes the match was going really well, but then something changed and everything seemed to be working against us which led to us falling apart somewhat. That really shouldn’t happen. Of course it’s ok to lose in Dortmund, but the fact that we were neck and neck for most of the match and that’s why the defeat was frustrating.
